Habitat For Humanity

My sister and i went to volunteer at Habitat For Humanity today. We worked at the ReStore part of their organization. We packaged donated items,  so the were ready to sell. It was such a fun experience, the manager was impressed with how fast we were cruising the whole time, and ran out of things for us to do before our shift ended so we ended up helping to get the paper labels prepared for the next time they had stuff to get packaged. He said that we had packed up hundreds of dollars worth of items, and that it helped so much. By the end of the day our hands were torn up and dirty and we were so tired at the end of our shirt, but man it felt so good to be doing something with our hands that helped other people. It felt good to have purpose and to get out of our mindsets of us, and focus even for just four hours on helping other people. This definitely got me excited for my future service projects, this is going to be an awesome journey!

* If you would like to volunteer at Habitat For Humanity, just go to their website, they have directions of how to sign up on their website.

First service project : Deep clean grandmas house

My first idea came when i was at my grandmas house. She has Alzheimer's and her house has been gradually been getting dirtier and dirtier. She was always such a clean person and i think when her house is messy it affects her condition for the worse. So i thought what a better way to start my service journey this year, than to serve someone who is so close to my heart. My whole family thought it was a great idea and we took all day one saturday to deep clean her entire house. From cleaning her carpets, to scrubbing down the walls and bathrooms. We transformed everything, and you could tell how much better she felt in a clean environment. Service doesn't always have to involve some big organization to give your time or money to, sometimes its even better to give back to those around us that are often overlooked. I love my grandmother dearly, and i have felt so much closer to her since deciding to do something that i know she would love and appreciate.

Intro

For a while I haven't felt like me, I have felt like I have let life drag me down and i've just been getting by. The last month or so i have been focusing a lot more on what makes me happy, which is 1- Doing service and 2- Focusing on the good things in life instead of the bad. I have felt more like me since starting doing this than i have in a long time. I've learned a lot in the last little while, and the main lesson has been, life is what you make it, so i'm going to make mine great! This blog is going to be tracking my journey with service projects and a document of what i am grateful for. My hope is to inspire others to do service, and to focus on the positive things in life, from simply just doing it myself. Hopefully i can come up with some good ideas, any one is more than welcome to take what i do and do it themselves or, give me suggestions! It's hard to find a place to get good service ideas, so I decided that i would get as much information on where to serve in Utah as i could, and compile it so the information is easily accessible for others. Anyways enough rambling, On to the good stuff, here is a quote that i love that describes how i feel so well, it is from the book The Art Of Loving by Erich Fromm "Giving is more joyous than receiving, not because it is a deprivation, but because in the act of giving lies the expression of my aliveness". I'm going to be doing a service project every week from now until Christmas, i will be documenting all that i do on this blog, and I would love for you guys to share in my journey!
